Brand analysis for naming

Know the market before you name for it. Market and brand environment analysis as the foundation of name development.

Anyone naming something new has to know what is already taken.

Every naming project takes place in an environment that already exists: competitors have names, industries have terminology, markets have conventions.

Brand analysis for naming makes that environment visible, systematically, before name creation begins. It examines which naming logics prevail in the market, which terms are worn out, where differentiation is possible and where the legal or cultural limits lie.

The aim is a body of knowledge that naming strategy and creation can build on – precise, condensed, decision-ready.

Two perspectives: macro environment and micro environment.

The analysis is structured into two perspectives, weighted differently depending on the industry and the international reach of the project.

Which social, technological, economic and regulatory developments shape the market? Which trends are changing how products and companies are perceived? Are there cultural, religious or ethical aspects that have to be taken into account in naming?

The macro analysis creates the context in which a name has to hold up not just today, but in five or ten years’ time.

This is where it gets specific. How do competitors name their products and brands? Which patterns can be identified – descriptive, technical, associative? Which terms dominate the industry’s technical vocabulary? And above all, where is there room in the naming space for something distinctive?

The micro analysis is the compass for name creation. It shows not only what is taken, but also what is missing.

From analysis to strategy

The findings of the brand analysis do not end up in a report that disappears into a drawer. They feed directly into the naming strategy – as guardrails for creation, as a basis for internal decision-making, and as a reference point for the brand's later positioning.

Anyone who knows their brand environment is not creating blindly. They are creating into the space that is open – strategically, linguistically, legally.
